Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to become a cleaner girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. Her chosen path proved to be filled with challenges such as In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
